Maj. Gen. Clarke T. Baldwin, Jr.

Clarke Tileston Baldwin, Jr. (27 February 1923 in Newton, Massachusetts - 6 December 1982 in Washington D.C.) was a United States Army Major General.

Early life[]

Clarke was born in Newton, Massachusetts on February 27, 1923, to Clarke Sr. and Janice L. Baldwin. He also had two sisters (Jane and Mary) and a brother (Liggett). His father was a Boston investment banker. Following early schooling in Newton, the family moved to Warrenton, Virginia where he attended the Stuyvesant School.

  • 1940 - 1943: Attended the United States Military Academy, graduated on June 1, 1943
  • 1943 - 1945: Commissioned in the Cavalry (ASN: 0–26037); served in World War II with the 3rd Cavalry Group (Mechanized); part of the first group of ten officers in Detachment R studying Russian for eighteen months at Columbia University followed by another eighteen months of intensive study at Oberammagau, Germany; as part of this training he served as a State Department courier between Berlin and Moscow and as an interpreter of the Allied Control Command in Berlin.
  • 1948 - ?: sent to Bad Kreuznach as a liaison officer to the French northern zone for the 2nd Constabulary.
  • 1950 - ?: assigned to the Military Academy to teach German for one year and Russian for two years.
  • ? - ?: sent to Cairo as an assistant Army attaché where he wrote a pilot course in Arabic for use at the Academy.
  • ? - 1957: studied at the United States Army Command and General Staff College

Post-military career[]

He was a consultant to the General Research Corporation in McLean, Virginia. He and his wife continued to live in their home in Falls Church, Virginia.

Personal life[]

Clarke married Bettie Powell Rodes in the Nicolassee church in Berlin, Germany on May 1, 1948. Together they had four daughters (Janet, Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Victoria) and a son (Clarke III). His wife died on August 1, 2015.

Death[]

He passed away on December 6, 1982, in Washington D.C. He was 59 years old. He was buried in the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
