Map of Fort George

Fort George (former Fort Majebigwaduce, Fort Castine) was an earthworks fort built by the British to defend their new founded colony New Ireland during the American Revolutionary War. The fort is most well known for helping to defeat the American patriot Penobscot Expedition's attempt to reclaim the territory.

Fort George is listed on the NRHP in Maine. The roughly 3-acre remains of the fort are located on the Bagaduce Peninsula in the town of Castine, Maine. The British dug a defensive canal that is still visible in satellite photos. The fort is currently a park. The perimeter of the fort is an earthen mound that is still present. Inside the perimeter, there is now a baseball diamond.

Legacy[]

Fort George is the site of Majabigwaduce, the location for Bernard Cornwell's 2010 book The Fort about the Penobscot Expedition.
