John Stanley Ames, Jr. (26 March 1910 in Boston, Massachusetts - 9 July 1973 in Camden, Maine) was an American politician and Lawyer. He served on the Massachusetts Governor's Council from 1947 to 1948.

Early life and education[]

John was born in Boston, Massachusetts on March 26, 1910 to John Sr. and Anne Ames. He also had two brothers (David and Richard) and a sister (Rebecca). He graduated from Milton Academy in 1928, Harvard University in 1932, and University of Virginia Law School in 1936.

Military Service[]

He joined the United States Navy on April 15, 1942 serving in World War II until being discharged on November 3, 1945.

Politics[]

He joined the Republican Party, became a member of the Easton Finance Committee and later served on the Massachusetts Governor's Council from 1947 to 1948. He was a special assistant to Winthrop Aldrich when he was Ambassador to the Court of St. James.

Organizations[]

He was a member of the Easton Lions Club, trustee for the North Easton Savings Bank, member of the Board of Trustees for the Boy's Clubs of Boston, and member of the Board of Trustees for Children's Hospital of Boston.

Personal life[]

He married Isabel Biddle Henry on October 12, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Together they had two known children (John III, and Mary). They later divorced and he married Eleanor Rider. He now had two daughters and two sons after these marriages.

Death[]

He died on July 9, 1973 in Camden, Maine at the age of 63. He was buried in the Village Cemetery in Easton, Massachusetts
