The Welsh Horse unlike the other Yeomanry regiments was newly formed and raised in 1914, almost single handed by their aspiring Commanding Officer Lt Colonel Arthur Owen Vaughan DSO OBE DCM. During the Great War the Regiment would raise three regiment but only the First Line Regiment would see active service - as Infantry. In the event, Vaughan was not given command; this went to Lord Kensington, a well-known Pembrokeshire landowner, instead.
1/1st Welsh Horse[]
Newly raised in August 1914, 1/1st Welsh Horse was from early 1915, attached to the North Midland Mounted Brigade of the 1st Mounted Division they were later transferred to the Eastern Mounted Brigade in same Division. In September 1915,they were dismounted and sent to the Dardanelles and participated in the actions at Gallipoli, being part of the ANZAC bridgehead landing there on October 8, 1915. Later in the campaign, they were attached to the 54th (East Anglian) Division, and carried out mining operations at Hill 60. After the evacuation from Gallipoli, they moved to Egypt in December 1915 and were attached to the 3rd Dismounted Brigade on Suez Canal defence duties. In March 1917 the Regiment was amalgamated with 1/1st Montgomeryshire Yeomanry to form the 25th Battalion, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, and became part of the 231st Brigade, 74th (Yeomanry) Division, and moved to the Western Front in France in May 1918.[1]
2/1st Welsh Horse[]
The second line regiment, 2/1st Welsh Horse was formed in September 1914; they remained in the United Kingdom attached to the 2/1st South Wales Mounted Brigade, which in September 1915 became attached to the new 1st Mounted Division. They amalgamated with the 2/1st Montgomeryshire Yeomanry during 1916, and did not see any active service.[1] Lord Kenyon KCVO TD was their Commanding Officer.[2]
3/1st Welsh Horse[]
3/1st Welsh Horse was formed in 1915, and they also remained in the United Kingdom until being disbanded in early 1917.[1]
Modern associations[]
The Welsh Horse Yeomanry, a civilian organisation, based near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire, who perform Arena and Living History Displays all over the country, including the Welsh Horse Musical Ride.
